Spock's Older Brother

Some recent drawings, from the sketchbook. I drew this character in a bar, and a friend nearby commented that he looked like Spock's brother. So, running with that, I came up with a little biography for Spock's older brother ... Lew.

Don't Even Need the Razor Blades

A new comic about a really cold winter, which is, unfortunately, completely at odds to the start of summer that we just embarked upon. But, maybe that's ok ... There's the Camus quote, to the effect that, "In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." Which is a fine outlook, I suppose, though it necessarily admits the inverse: That every inner summer is surrounded by a big blank winter of bone-chilling, universal frigidity that is relentlessly assaulting and crippling us with its inevitable force of obliterating power. Snow what I mean?

Anyway, the comic was also bit of an experiment in certain respects, so it is what it is. Like most things, it's not perfect, but I hope there are a few things to recommend it. At the very least, you deserve a chuckle or two, out of it.

Reflections on Martha's Vineyard

Vineyard Stories has just published Reflections on Martha's Vineyard, a collection of my grandfather's newspaper columns, written during his semi-retirement. My aunt spearheaded the project, Tom Dunlop (who, as a young man, knew my grandfather) edited the book, and I provided the illustrations.

William A. Caldwell was already a winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his work as editor of a New Jersey newspaper when he moved to the Martha's Vineyard, MA, in 1972. For the next 12 years, he wrote a column for the Vineyard Gazette called Reflections of That Man Friday. Reflections on Martha's Vineyard is a collection of those brilliant essays whether funny or critical, angry or compassionate, irrefutably logical but often philosophically surprising. The essays remain surprisingly relevant to today's Vineyard, an island eight miles off the coast of Massachusetts, written in a style that captures some of the best of writing about this small place.

Howzit Funnies #3

The second book that I hope (!) to have at SPX is the third issue of "Howzit Funnies." Originally inspired by old blues songs, these comics feature silly puns and happy faces, as well as dark surrealism, psychological terror, physical mutilation and, for lack of a better word, grotesquerie. Issue #3 stars a diverse set of characters including Mr. Morris; Fat F*ck; a guy with candles jammed into his eyes; and several other happy characters who look forward to meeting you.
